"Big E", USS Enterprise était le deuxième du porte-avions de classe Yorktown. La construction a commencé en 1934 et a été officiellement lancée en 1936. Elle est entrée en service en 1938.

L'USS Enterprise a échappé de peu à l'attaque japonaise inopinée du 7 décembre 1941 sur Pearl Harbor en raison d'un temps orageux. Sans plus tarder, l'USS Enterprise fut immédiatement chargé de combattre les Japonais.
