Le HMS Ark Royal (fanion numéro 91) était un porte-avions de la Royal Navy qui a servi pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Conçu en 1934 pour s'adapter aux restrictions du traité naval de Washington, l'Ark Royal a été construit par Cammell Laird and Company, Ltd. à Birkenhead, en Angleterre, et achevé en novembre 1938. Sa conception différait des porte-avions précédents. Ark Royal a été le premier navire sur lequel les hangars et le poste de pilotage faisaient partie intégrante de la coque, au lieu d'un ajout ou d'une partie de la superstructure. Conçu pour transporter un grand nombre d'avions, il possédait deux niveaux de pont de hangar. Elle a servi pendant une période qui a vu pour la première fois l'utilisation intensive de la puissance aérienne navale; un certain nombre de tactiques de transport ont été développées et affinées à bord de l'Ark Royal.

Ark Royal a servi dans certains des théâtres navals les plus actifs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Elle a été impliquée dans les premières tueries aériennes et sous-marines de la guerre, les opérations au large de la Norvège, la recherche du cuirassé allemand Bismarck et les convois de Malte. L'Ark Royal a survécu à plusieurs quasi-accidents et s'est forgé une réputation de "navire porte-bonheur". Les Allemands l'ont signalé à tort comme coulé à plusieurs reprises.

Il est torpillé le 13 novembre 1941 par le sous-marin allemand U-81 et coule le lendemain. Son naufrage a fait l'objet de plusieurs enquêtes; les enquêteurs tenaient à savoir comment le porte-avions avait été perdu, malgré les efforts déployés pour sauver le navire et le remorquer jusqu'à la base navale de Gibraltar. Ils ont constaté que plusieurs défauts de conception ont contribué à la perte, qui ont été corrigés dans les nouveaux transporteurs britanniques.

HMS Ark Royal (pennant number 91) was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that served during the Second World War.

Designed in 1934 to fit the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird and Company, Ltd. at Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938. Her design differed from previous aircraft carriers. Ark Royal was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, instead of an add-on or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, she had two hangar deck levels. She served during a period that first saw the extensive use of naval air power; a number of carrier tactics were developed and refined aboard Ark Royal.

Ark Royal served in some of the most active naval theatres of the Second World War. She was involved in the first aerial and U-boat kills of the war, operations off Norway, the search for the German battleship Bismarck, and the Malta Convoys. Ark Royal survived several near misses and gained a reputation as a 'lucky ship'. The Germans incorrectly reported her as sunk on multiple occasions.

She was torpedoed on 13 November 1941 by the German submarine U-81 and sank the following day. Her sinking was the subject of several inquiries; investigators were keen to know how the carrier was lost, in spite of efforts to save the ship and tow her to the naval base at Gibraltar. They found that several design flaws contributed to the loss, which were rectified in new British carriers.
