Le chasseur de chars américain M10 a servi pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Après l'entrée des États-Unis dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la formation de la Tank Destroyer Force, un véhicule adapté était nécessaire pour équiper les nouveaux bataillons. En novembre 1941, l'armée a demandé un véhicule avec un canon dans une tourelle entièrement rotative après que les modèles précédents aient été critiqués pour être trop mal conçus.

Le prototype du M10 a été développé au début de 1942 et a été livré en avril de la même année. Après les modifications demandées à la coque et à la tourelle, la version modifiée a été préparée pour la production en juin 1943, apparaissant sous le nom de 3 pouces Gun Motor Carriage M10. Il a monté un canon M7 de 3 pouces (76,2 mm) dans une tourelle rotative sur un châssis de char Sherman M4A2 modifié.

Les productions se sont déroulées de septembre 1942 à décembre 1943. Le M10 était numériquement le chasseur de chars américain le plus important de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il combinait un blindage mince mais incliné avec la transmission fiable du M4 Sherman et une arme antichar raisonnablement puissante montée dans une tourelle à toit ouvert. Malgré son obsolescence face à des chars allemands plus puissants comme le Panther et l'introduction de types plus puissants et mieux conçus en remplacement, le M10 est resté en service jusqu'à la fin de la guerre.

The American M10 tank destroyer served during WWII. After the US entry into World War II and the formation of the Tank Destroyer Force, a suitable vehicle was needed to equip the new battalions. By November 1941, the Army requested a vehicle with a gun in a fully rotating turret after previous models were criticised for being too poorly designed.

The prototype of the M10 was developed in early 1942, and was delivered in April of that year. After requested changes to the hull and turret, the modified version was readied for production in June 1943, appearing as the 3-inch Gun Motor Carriage M10. It mounted a 3-inch (76.2 mm) Gun M7 in a rotating turret on a modified M4A2 Sherman tank chassis.

Productions ran from September 1942 to December 1943. The M10 was numerically the most important U.S. tank destroyer of World War II. It combined thin but sloped armor with the M4 Sherman's reliable drivetrain and a reasonably potent anti-tank weapon mounted in an open-topped turret. Despite its obsolescence in the face of more powerful German tanks like the Panther and the introduction of more powerful and better-designed types as replacements, the M10 remained in service until the end of the war.
